3 weeks old

Sorry it has taken me so long to update. We have been having some difficult nights, and tricky days. Owen is growing super fast. When we went to the doctor last week he had gained 19 ounces in just 10 days and was already 9 lbs 15 oz. That is close to 2 ounces a day! This was good news because we took him in because we thought he had some reflux issues. It is reassuring that he is keeping in so many calories. He was prescribed an antacid, axid. It tastes horrible and he makes an AWFUL face when I shoot it into his mouth, but it seems to help decrease the amount of projectile spit up. I have also changed the way I nurse him so that he is more upright, there is more burping and I try to hold him upright for about 20 minutes before I put him back down. He still hates being on his back and screams murder. So...Owen sleeps in his swing that we bring upstairs every night. I purchased a Nap Nanny that is a foam block that I put in the bassinet that places him at a 30 degree angle that seems to help. He is still really fussy....for no apparent reason he will scream and scream, and there is only a small window of time when he is happy. I feel I spend my day trying to keep him from turning into a siren. Most days I can get him to nap for an hour, but then he strains, grunts, almost clears his throat, and arches his neck and back and seems very uncomfortable. Apparently this is colic. He will be oookkk during the day, but it is getting worse, meaning the crying has increased. I feel bad for Brian too because the "witching hour" between 5-9 pm is when he really puts on a show, crying, wanted to nurse every hour, and has to be walked and swaddled to stop crying. This is pretty common among coliky babies, right when your spouse gets home and you are trying to eat dinner! At least he puts up with the swaddling to make his nights a little better and will sleep 2-3 hours. I am hoping to look back at this post and laugh...smile maybe? Right now I think it is more therapeutic for me because I know Owen is going to be fine, and he is healthy. All I can say is thank God for the swing and the bouncy vibrating seat. I cannot WAIT for Owen to smile. I feel like if I can see him smile and interact with me, then I will feel more connected to him, instead of just trying to calm him moment to moment. He is 3 weeks old, so maybe he will crack one in the next 2 weeks. I see his sleep smiles and I can't wait to see those dimples!

  1. Eeek, man that is rough! What is the cause of colic? That really sucks that there doesn't seem to be a definitive solution...like a medication he could take. Aye yigh yigh, hope it ends soon!
